Military Tactics for Medieval Warfare in Fantasy Novels.

Read a great deal on medieval (or older) military tactics and adapt them to suit the situation. Strangely Greek and Roman tactics are better preserved than medieval. You can gain better information on the Sassanid and Persian empires cavalry tactics than you can on anything in Europe a thousand years later. Also, you need to use the size and adaptability when creating a viable battle plan. Especially in a fantasy situation.

I remember the Romans against the Picts (or Dacians for that matter). Your average Roman soldier at that time was four foot nine inches tall. Picts six foot three inches tall. Giants in comparison. Giants with huge swords, axes, or hammers. Few Roman legionaries could stand one to one with them. But that never mattered for it would never be one to one.

You’re Six foot odd, with a big sword. If the next in line stands close to you, you will kill your neighbor, so you must stand, say, five or six feet apart, probably, more. The Roman soldiers are packed closely together, well defended by shields with short stabbing swords. So, you, the giant, are not facing one Roman legionary but three or four.

Unless you are Jack Reacher or Jason Statham that means death for the one no matter how tough you are (in real life). So, research all you can and follow real tactics even in fantasy situations. Just my opinion.
