I suspect that every answer to this question will suggest different things. We all have our foibles.
What will turn me off instantly are anachronism’s like swords in space (I hate Star Wars), faster than light travel (without a good reason or explanation), Interstellar distances, unexamined.
Approaching the galactic centre (with the exclusion of Gregory Benford who handled that scenario rather well)
Cataclysmic events (that happen so rarely in space)
First contact, where the aliens and humans have a chat (hmmmm).
Yet I have one opposing take on my own argument. I will accept silliness if the novel is based on a future so far away that we cannot know what it would be like. So Iain M Banks, Issac Asimov, David Brin, Michael Cobley etc. are fine with me. But they need to let me know very quickly.
Otherwise I like them to stick with plausible, correct or possible physics. But that is just me. Many others have different ideas look how well swords in space (Star Wars) is doing. Lol- and “Dune” is there a sillier story out there?
